March 25 to March 29, 2024

An Event for Admitted Students

A Virtual Event for Admitted Students

Congratulations on your decision to further your educational growth and training in the dynamic field of public health.

Our series of admitted student events are designed to show you what the University of Minnesota School of Public Health has to offer. You and dozens of your fellow public health students from across the globe will gain an in-depth understanding of the future of public health, and learn about the many ways in which you can get involved and be supported in your professional journey.

We encourage you to attend all sessions that you are able to. Please select sessions you are interested in attending in the registration form for a formal RSVP. All registered students will receive a digital program with links to virtual sessions before Admitted Student Week begins. Sessions offered are subject to change. Changes will be updated on this website.

Agenda

12 p.m. to 2 p.m. CST

This formal kick off to our series of events includes a welcome to admitted students from Dean Melinda Pettigrew.

Assistant Dean of Enrolled Student Experience, Jennifer Porter, will highlight what you can expect as an SPH student, including tools for supporting your wellbeing and a successful academic experience. Current SPH students will be available to answer questions about the Minnesota experience including What are the classes like? Are faculty really as accessible as they seem? How do you engage inside and outside of the School? What advice do you have? Is it really that cold in Minnesota? We want this session to be run by you and your questions, so come prepared!

12 p.m. to 1 p.m. CST

Public health professionals have multiple avenues to address systemic racism and oppression, through research, practice, and education. The U of M School of Public Health (SPH) works to equip our students with the knowledge and skills to help marginalized communities thrive. The SPH Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will introduce newly admitted students to the SPH Strategic Plan for Antiracism as well as how effective our efforts have been thus far. We will offer a realistic summary of our challenges and invite the audience into discussion about how we can all play a part in the work of justice.

4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST

Interested students must RSVP by Wednesday, March 20 to receive further information about completing the CliftonStrengths assessment.

Staff in the SPH Career and Professional Development Center provide the guidance and resources you need to understand the professional marketplace and launch a public health career. Join us to learn more about what services are in place to support your professional career in public health, during and after your academic program.

This session will also give students the opportunity to dive into the world of strengths-based development with our interactive CliftonStrengths workshop, co-presented by current University of Minnesota School of Public Health students. Discover your unique talents and learn how to apply them effectively in your academic and professional journey in public health. Come away with actionable strategies to maximize your potential and make a meaningful impact in your studies and career.

12 p.m. to 1 p.m. CST

How you will finance your public health education is critical. A financial aid counselor from the University’s OneStop Student Services will provide an overview of the financial aid & FAFSA processes, what is different in graduate education, and understanding what happens after you graduate. The School of Public Health’s (SPH) Scholarship Coordinator will also discuss some SPH specific funding opportunities, including the school-wide scholarship program.
