The citizens of Colorado are learning how to promote health equity in their communities with the help of Assistant Professor Rachel Hardeman, who presented, “Racism and Health Inequities,” as a part of the ColoradoTrust’s Health Equity Learning Series in Denver in November 2016. The talk explored the history of structural racism; its role in creating health inequities; and the importance of acknowledging racism in order to mitigate its harm to society and health.

ColoradoTrust is now sharing a recording of the presentation with communities across the state and Hardeman’s message was recently featured in a Steamboat Springs news story in advance of her talk on Jan. 31.

“Health inequities are avoidable and unjust,” says Hardeman. “The more states, organizations, and systems that prioritize the elimination of health inequities — and acknowledge and work toward dismantling structural racism — the closer we will be to achieving health equity in our society.”
