When we are immersed in an institution like a university, we do not always realize how unspoken cultural values and protocols shape the ways we interact and do our work. These protocols can create barriers to developing community-university partnerships, especially if they remain under the surface. Understanding how this (western-based) culture operates and shows up in our relationships is an important part of creating a space for true partnership which can draw on the cultural knowledge resources that each partner brings.
