Mapping Urban Maternity Care Landscapes: A Mixed Methods Approach
This presentation will discuss urban maternity ward closures in the context of worsening maternal mortality rates and stark racial/ethnic inequities in maternal health outcomes in the United States. McGregor will present recent work that utilizes alternate approaches – quantitative analysis of hospital administrative data, spatial analysis, and qualitative semi- structured interviews/narratives – to better understand how OB unit closures affect outcomes, and pathways to care in New Jersey and Washington, DC. The aim of this research is to assess the nature and consequences of the spatial maldistribution of access to care during the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
