Over the last decade, especially since the 2020 “Summer of Racial Reckoning,” structural racism has been increasingly recognized as a public health issue, impacting more than the criminal legal system. There has been a rapid upsurge of empirical studies seeking to operationalize structural racism quantitatively. During this seminar, I will be exploring the dimensions of structural racism, before delving into a few approaches to the operationalization of structural racism in population health science. Then, I will present some of the challenges associated with different approaches. Finally, I will wrap up by speculating about directions we still need to go in to further this work, especially in epidemiology.
