Kozhimannil, Attanasio Earn Best Research Article from Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health
The study by SPH graduate Laura Attanasio and Associate Professor Katy Kozhimannil examined data on hospital-based births in New York state in 2014 and found that hospitals with more midwife-attended births had lower rates of cesarean birth and episiotomy among low-risk women.
Ruby Nguyen Honored as Collegiate Recipient of the 2019 President’s Community-Engaged Scholar Award
Associate Professor Ruby Nguyen received the President’s Community-Engaged Scholar Award to honor her work in service of the public good, and especially for the well-being of Asian families in Minnesota.

Assistant Professor David Vock has been named a McKnight Presidential Fellow, a three-year award given to promising faculty members based on their research, scholarship, leadership, and ability to advance University of Minnesota priorities.
University honors Begun with major education award
Professor Jim Begun received the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Graduate and Professional Education and becomes a member the University’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Begun focuses on building engagement with students to make learning more effective and is a past recipient of SPH’s Leonard M. Schuman Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Basta awarded selective McKnight Land-Grant Professorship
The University chose Assistant Professor Nicole Basta for one of the most sought-after faculty awards at the University of Minnesota. Designed for new assistant professors, the two-year professorship acknowledges Basta’s promise, her track record of innovative research and funding success, and her commitment to teaching and service.
