Dear students,
The public health field faces complex challenges, making your growing expertise more essential than ever. As the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) affirmed, “Now is the time to strengthen, not weaken, our commitment to public health.” Explore these 10 tips to find your place in the field after graduation.
10. Remember: A strong public health workforce is essential
As you advance in your public health education and career path, remember that a diverse public health workforce is critical to the well-being of communities worldwide. Focus on the larger impact – the work you’re doing today lays the foundation for lasting, transformative change in the communities that need it most.
9. Turn uncertainty into opportunity
Traditional job search methods, like job ads, can be discouraging. Explore industries or companies you haven’t considered (e.g., non-profit or private sector) using resources like Public Health Careers. Many fast-growing fields need the skills you’re developing. Stay open to new roles and locations, and adapt your search to discover unexpected opportunities. Also, check out APHA’s Public Health Jobs page.
8. Use UMN resources to prepare your materials
Take full advantage of the many tools and resources available that may include but are not limited to the Canvas Website, Career Workshops, SPH Jobs, or getting personalized advice and coaching during Drop-in Hours and/or Student Appointments.
7. Create a plan and set aside time for your job search
Setting clear goals and a timeline will help you stay organized and proactive. Establish a consistent job search routine by scheduling dedicated time each week for research, networking, and applications. Break your goals into small, manageable steps to maintain momentum.
6. Expand your network and tap into your community
Leverage LinkedIn to connect with alumni and professionals in your field of interest. Building meaningful relationships is key—more than 70% of jobs are secured through personal connections. Engage in conversations, seek advice, and attend networking events to open doors to new opportunities.
5. Take care of yourself
Job searching can be stressful, so prioritize your well-being. Maintain healthy habits—stay active, eat well, sleep enough, and practice mindfulness. Manage your news intake to reduce stress, and take advantage of mental health resources and BeWell programming.
4. This will be a marathon, not a sprint
Job searching is a long-term process that requires persistence, patience, and adaptability. The job market fluctuates due to seasonal hiring, fiscal cycles, and economic trends. Staying flexible and resilient will help you navigate these shifts effectively.
3. Stay inspired
Check out webinars, seminars, and podcasts to learn from those doing the work on the ground. ASPPH, American Public Health Association (APHA), and Justice in Public Health are great places to start.
2. Find Your Path, But Don’t Go It Alone
Public health careers aren’t one-size-fits-all—everyone’s journey is different. Continue to connect with mentors, peers, faculty, and colleagues for advice and encouragement. Celebrate wins (big and small), swap stories, and remember: you’ve got a whole crew cheering you on!
1. You’ve got this!
Remember why you wanted to go into public health and stay true to your passion. Believe in yourself and your purpose. Whenever you face challenges, stay grounded by journaling your experiences, reflecting on your values, and connecting with trusted individuals for support.
