University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH) Professor Joe Koopmeiners, head of the SPH Division of Biostatistics, has been selected as a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the world’s largest community of statisticians.
Founded in Boston in 1839, the ASA is the second oldest continuously operating professional association in the country. Designation as an ASA Fellow is a highly selective process — the organization elects no more than 0.3% of the total association membership as fellows each year.
Koopmeiners is a professor and division head in SPH’s Division of Biostatistics. His research interests include Bayesian adaptive methods for clinical trials, causal inference, and biomedical imaging. In addition, Dr. Koopmeiners is the Director of the Biostatistics and Data Management Core for a multi-institution program project evaluating the effect of nicotine reduction on smoking behavior, leads the RapidEval Unit of the Center for Learning Health System Sciences, and has a long-running collaboration to develop multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging as a diagnostic tool for prostate cancer.
In recognizing Koopmeiners, the ASA cited several of his professional accomplishments, including his:
- “Outstanding contributions to methodological developments in adaptive clinical trials, early phase trials, tobacco regulatory science, and biomarker validation;
- “Successful translation of knowledge both to and from high-impact collaborative science;
- “Leadership in academic biostatistics;
- “And many contributions to student mentoring and professional service.”
This significant honor has been bestowed by the ASA for nearly 100 years. To be selected as a Fellow, the ASA notes, nominees must have an established reputation and have made outstanding contributions to statistical science.
